A BRASILEIRA CELEBRATES 115 YEARS OF HISTORY
Hotel launches on café’s anniversary
The iconic A Brasileira café opened its doors on 4 May 1903, and to mark its 115th anniversary, the opening ceremony of the Pestana Porto – A Brasileira City Center & Heritage Building was held, bringing together not only the centennial café, but a 5-star hotel and a restaurant serving signature cuisine.
The event was attended by Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto; António Oliveira, project promoter and investor; and Dionísio Pestana, President of the Pestana Hotel Group, among other guests.
It should be noted that Pestana Porto – A Brasileira City Center & Heritage Building is a result of a management partnership between businessman António Oliveira’s company “OPPA – A BRASILEIRA, LDA” and Dionísio Pestana’s Group, integrating the distribution channels of the largest international Portuguese hotel chain.
At the opening ceremony, António de Oliveira, President of OPPA SA, stressed that, “A Brasileira, for me, is much more than a business project, much more than a business opportunity, much more than a professional experience. A Brasileira is, for me, above all, a re-encounter with my own memory, a re-encounter with Porto’s soul, a re-encounter with a world of emotions.”
“We are very honoured by this partnership with Dr António Oliveira. I am sure that this is and will be a winning investment on what is an important destination for the Pestana Hotel Group. We have always believed in Porto’s success, energy and dynamism, where we have been present for more than 20 years, and in that regard, I would like to highlight the work in revitalising and promoting the city’s tourism, which we hope will continue to be developed,” says the Pestana Hotel Group’s President, Dionísio Pestana.
Pestana Porto – A Brasileira City Center & Heritage Building is the fruit of the restoration of the centennial building located on Rua Sá da Bandeira. In addition to the café and the restaurant managed by chef Rui Martins, the hotel has 90 rooms and suites spread across six thematic floors, related to spices imported in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Portuguese maritime expansion, namely: Coffee, Tea, Cocoa, Pepper, Cinnamon and Anise. There is also a gym, meeting rooms and a French courtyard with a vertical garden.
The characteristics of the nineteenth century facade and the image of the ground floor rooms – café and restaurant – were preserved with its original design in a project developed by the APPEL Office’s architectural team, led by architect Ginestal Machado, resulting from the restoration of the work by architect Januário Godinho. The interior design was entrusted to Jaime Morais.
This is the 7th property within the Pestana Collection Hotels brand, joining the recent Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel & National Monument, the future Pestana Plaza Mayor and the properties located in Portugal: Pestana Palace Lisboa Hotel & National Monument, Pestana Vintage Porto Hotel & World Heritage Site, Pestana Cidadela Cascais Pousada & Art District, and Pestana Palácio do Freixo Pousada & National Monument.
