Yesterday, the Pestana Hotel Group presented the first phase of Pousada Vila de Óbidos, located within the walls of the medieval village where Misericórdia Hospital could once be found. This building forms the first hub of the brand’s expansion, now offering 17 rooms. At the beginning of next year, Pousadas de Portugal will open Estalagem do Lidador (hub 2) with 11 new rooms only 150 meters away. The new hubs triple hotel capacity in the village and represent an investment totalling 2 million euros.

Among those at the ceremony were 50 guests and representatives of the Pestana Hotel Group Administration, Enatur, Santa Casa da Misericórdia, regional entities and the press. Luís Castanheira Lopes, President of Grupo Pestana Pousadas, stressed the project’s importance in his speech, stating: “We continue with the history of Pousadas in the restoration of classified heritage and in the creation of a quality and distinguished tourism product, as has been the case for more than 75 years. With this project, Pousadas de Portugal maintains its strategic line of network restoration by adding establishments with better locations, offering its premium quality product wherever there is demand, and choosing buildings with great significance and patrimonial and architectural relevance, adding consistency to its offer and enhancing its distinctiveness.”

In a continuous effort to preserve and restore heritage buildings, the Pestana Hotel Group has developed its plan to expand the network over the last 15 years, now reconverting the historic Pousada de Portugal building integrated in the Charming Hotels brand. Located just 200 meters from the Castle, the new property is the starting point for exploring the town within the walls, in what is one of the main tourist destinations of the country and which retains the typical stone sidewalks and whitewashed houses.

Pousada da Vila de Óbidos features two characteristic V-shaped facades (V for Vila) and has 17 rooms divided into three types – Pousada, Superior and Premium – comprising carefully selected furniture, providing a cosy atmosphere that excels in comfort and authenticity. All rooms are equipped with 21st century amenities and offer the unique experience of sleeping in a 17th century building overlooking the medieval village. The property has an inviting breakfast area that extends through the hotel’s interior patio. The first meal of the day is traditionally made up of regional specialities and organic products.

The new Vila de Óbidos Pousada is just 3 minutes walking from Óbidos Castle, which is considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal and is the first national monument to join the Pousada de Portugal’s network.  The Pestana Hotel Group’s historic hotels maintain their commitment to combining the cultural and patrimonial aspect with the creation of unique and quality products, settings and environments.
