Over 100 guests gathered for a unique evening

The first Pousada de Portugal was inaugurated on April 19th 1942 marking the birth of a crucial brand for Portuguese tourism and culture. 75 years later, the remarkable history of Pousadas de Portugal was celebrated with a Gala Dinner held at the stunning Throne Room of Queluz Palace, bringing together more than 100 guests, including Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Secretary of State for Tourism Ana Mendes Godinho, and some of the most important personalities in Portuguese tourism, politics and economy.

With 33 units scattered across the country, Pousadas de Portugal are synonymous with culture, history and tradition, furthering the preservation and protection of some of the most important traits of Portuguese identity. With a portfolio brimming with palaces, convents and castles, the Group’s units are like guardians of local knowledge and traditions, which are palpable not only in the buildings themselves but also in the culinary habits and the many stories local heritage – both material and human – conceals.

“This was a time of gathering and celebration of the memories of an iconic hotel chain, which has in its buildings and employees a heritage of immeasurable value. We have honored 75 years of history that have taught us many lessons so we can stay focused on our core mission: to provide our usual quality service while maintaining an unbreakable commitment to the preservation of Portuguese culture and history. As far as Pousadas de Portugal is concerned, it is very clear that only by respecting our past can we project an even better future,” says Luis Castanheira Lopes, President of the Pestana Pousadas Group.

That April 19 evening revisited some of the most important landmarks in the history of Pousadas de Portugal, with several tributes to the Group and its employees, the screening of a commemorative film, and an award ceremony honoring some of the most decisive entities and individuals in the Group’s rich history. The event began at 8 pm, with a guest reception in the beautiful Music Hall, accompanied by a musical moment performed by Orquestra XXI. The closing act, on the other hand, was performed by Fado singer Cuca Roseta, who showcased some of her most popular tunes, lending a touch of Fado’s profoundness and tradition to a deeply Portuguese event.

The 75th anniversary celebration will extend throughout 2017 with several initiatives extolling the historical and human heritage of Pousadas de Portugal.
