THE PESTANA HOTEL GROUP INVESTS IN THE INTERNATIONALISATION OF THE COLLECTION BRAND
Pestana Amsterdam is about to open and work in Madrid is entering its second phase
The largest multinational Portuguese hotel chain has announced the strengthening of its presence in two major European capitals: Amsterdam and Madrid, broadening and internationalising the Pestana Collection Hotels’ portfolio beyond Portugal.
In the Netherlands, the Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel & National Monument is a result of an investment of €40 million, with its opening scheduled as a soft opening in December. The new 5-star hotel is a National Monument, which once served as the New Amstel Town Hall and was subsequently the city of Amsterdam’s Archives. On the banks of the Amstel River and a few minutes walk from the centre, the iconic neo-renaissance style building is one of the neighbourhood’s must-see attractions, and is considered the Dutch capital’s “Latin Quarter”. Acquired by the Pestana Hotel Group in 2014, it was completely renovated, preserving all of its historical elements and recreating a unique, comfortable, luxurious and cosy atmosphere. The property boasts 154 rooms, among which are apartments with distinct spaces and an extraordinary presidential suite. Also noteworthy is the new partnership with Dutch chef Peter Lute, who is at the helm of the cosmopolitan and refined cuisine of the Pestana Collection Hotels’ bar and restaurant, the ARC.
“We have reached another historic milestone at the Pestana Hotel Group, which shows the strengthening of our presence in main European capitals and the commitment to the expansion of the Pestana Collection Hotels brand, the Group’s premium brand, across borders,” says José Roquette, Chief Development Officer of the Pestana Hotel Group.
Investment also extends to the neighbouring Spain, with work on the forthcoming Pestana Plaza Mayor to enter its second phase, extending to Calle Imperial. It should be noted that, in 2015, the Group won the bid for the renovation of the historic Casa de la Carnicería. A 17th Century construction, it was used at the time to supply meat to the city’s shops. As it is over 400 years old, it is a building that has had Cultural Interest status since 1985. The property’s restoration and renovation project respects the architectural values of the space and pays homage to one of the ex-libris of Madrid’s historical centre. The hotel will comprise 70 rooms and is the result of €11 million in investment.
“Our experience in the restoration of historic heritage and adaptation of these buildings into hotels has led us to consolidate our investment in the Collection brand, whose properties embody the renovation of historic spaces into exceptional hotels, making them unique and iconic. The quality and excellence that the Collection brand conveys means that the Group has opted for its international expansion that now starts with Amsterdam and Madrid,” explains José Roquette.
The Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel & National Monument, and the Pestana Plaza Mayor are added alongside the Group’s 4 Collection Properties: Pestana Palace Lisboa Hotel & National Monument, Pestana Vintage Porto Hotel & World Heritage Site, Pestana Cidadela Cascais Pousada & Art District, Pestana Palácio do Freixo Pousada & National Monument.
